Reminder of recommendations to prevent infections and promote health at school

Issue 62: 3/5/2024 Strategic Objective:

Dear parents,

We would like to emphasize the importance of remaining vigilant and taking preventive measures to avoid the spread of infections within school communities.

Common infections such as colds, flu, gastrointestinal illnesses, and other contagious diseases can spread rapidly in school environments due to close physical proximity among students and frequent contact.

To reduce the risks of spreading these infections, here are some important tips to remind your children of and to implement as parents:

Regular handwashing: It is crucial to wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Encourage your children to wash their hands after using the restroom, before meals, and after playing outdoors. When handwashing is not feasible, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers to disinfect hands.

Avoid touching the face: Teach your children to refrain from touching their faces, especially their mouths, noses, and eyes. Hands often harbor germs, and avoiding face touching can help prevent infections.

Vaccination: Follow the Hong Kong government’s vaccination recommendations

Stay home when experiencing symptoms: If your child has a fever, a sore throat, a cough, frequent sneezing, abdominal pain, or vomiting, it is important to keep them at home.

Seek medical attention if necessary: If your child exhibits persistent symptoms or if you have concerns about their health, do not hesitate to consult a doctor. They can assess your child’s health condition and provide appropriate care.

Notify the school health department in case of illness: If your child falls ill, please inform the school health department. This will enable us to take necessary measures to prevent the spread of infections within our community.

Please remember that the Hong Kong health authorities recommend a 48-hour symptom-free period before returning to school. Ensure that your child has fully recovered and remains symptom-free for at least 48 hours before sending them back to school. This will help maintain a healthy environment for all students and staff.

By working together, we can minimize the risk of infections and safeguard the health and well-being of our children.

We sincerely appreciate your cooperation and continued support.

Best regards,

The FIS Health Department Team
