Debentures

To confirm your child’s place at FIS, you need to buy or hold a debenture. One debenture covers only one student.

The French International School of Hong Kong (FIS) is a non-profit company under the Hong Kong Company Ordinance, established and managed by a board of elected parents (French International School “Victor Segalen” Limited). By purchasing a debenture, the debenture holder agrees to becoming a member of the association and being subject to its articles of association.

There are two types of debentures

Corporate debenture (category A)
  • If a company will pay a student’s tuition fees, that student must be covered by their corporate debenture.
  • The debenture must be held by a company registered at the Hong Kong Company Registry.
  • A mature corporate debenture (held by a company for at least one year) provides priority on the international stream waiting list.
  • This debenture is fully redeemable* and transferable,** subject to its terms and conditions.
  • The current price is HK$250,000.***

*The debenture is refundable either when the student leaves FIS or when they are covered by another debenture.
**The corporate debenture can be allocated to another student for a non-refundable administrative fee of HK$25,000.
***The price of the debenture is subject to review at any time by the board. The applicable price will be that which is in effect on the day of payment. The issuance of debentures is subject to the prior approval of the board.

Private debenture (category B)
  • This debenture is fully redeemable,* subject to its terms and conditions.
  • This debenture is not transferable.
  • This debenture is for families paying for their children’s school fees themselves.
  • The current price is HK$90,000.***

*The debenture is refundable either when the student leaves FIS or when they are covered by another debenture.
***The price of the debenture is subject to review at any time by the board. The applicable price will be that which is in effect on the day of payment. The issuance of debentures is subject to the prior approval of the board.

Financial support

Each year, the following forms of financial support are available for study at FIS:

French stream
  • school grants from the French government
International stream
  • five corporate debentures sponsored by the Thierry Dubois family
  • two merit-based scholarships for students entering Year 12

School grants from the French government*

These school grants are for French students living abroad with their family, who have limited financial means.

They are allocated each year from the AEFE budget, which is approved by parliament.

There are two rounds of applications for financial support each year, one in January and one at the beginning of the school year.

*FIS is not involved in organising or allocating these grants. Families should direct any queries and their applications to the French Consulate General of Hong Kong and Macau.

The second funding round is for: :

  • those who have recently moved to Hong Kong
  • those whose financial situation has significantly changed since the end of first funding round
  • those appealing a decision from the first funding round

More information is available online on the Consulate General of Hong Kong and Macau’s website.

Five corporate debentures sponsored by the Thierry Dubois family

Five corporate debentures have been generously sponsored by the Thierry Dubois family for students applying for entry to the international stream.

Process and details:
  • Follow the normal admissions process for the international stream.
  • Applicants who receive this sponsored corporate debenture will also benefit from priority on the waiting list.
  • The applicant’s family will not have to buy a private debenture once they have been allocated a place.

Continued sponsorship will be subject to the student meeting the conditions set by the Thierry Dubois family.

How to apply

Email scholarship@lfis.edu.hk to find out about availability and the application process.

Two merit-based scholarships for students
entering Year 12

Two scholarships are also available for students with excellent academic results entering Year 12 in September 2021. They are for students who pass the FIS admissions assessment for entry into Year 12. They will be extended into Year 13 subject to academic and financial review at the end of the first year.

Though priority for financial support will be given to students entering Year 12 in the upcoming school year, students applying for Year 13 will also be considered.

The scholarship will fully or partially cover the following expenses:
  • debenture
  • tuition fees
  • compulsory school trips and outings
  • enrolment in one FIS extracurricular activity

FIS will waive the admissions assessment fees for external candidates applying for this scholarship.
