Gold Tickets to the Junior World Maths Competition

Issue 45: 24/11/2023 Blue Pool Road News (Reflections and Achievements) Y9, Y10, Y11 , , , , , , ,

At the Junior Mathematics Competition (JMC), 8 of our students showcased their remarkable achievements.  The students included: Y9B Joyce Lau, Y10A Ying Lau, Y10A Walter Oh, Y11A Michelangelo Dealberti, Y11A Emily Fung, Y11A Terry Wang, Y11B Rin Jeudy, and Y11C Melanie Sin.   The JWC encompassed 6 core rounds designed to assess five key skills: challenge, knowledge, collaboration, strategy, and creativity. Each skill category—strategy, creativity, and knowledge—featured one round that students engaged in individually, and another round that required collaborative efforts within a team.

The challenge rounds, were individual and took place online. These rounds encouraged students to think outside the box, explore unconventional approaches, and present unique solutions. An example was the Codebreaker round, where students looked at a a pattern of numbers from limited data and had complete the pattern in a short timeframe. Four of our students, Rin, Walter, Emily and Terry, made it to the Codebreaker finals.

The collaboration rounds, were in team of 3’s, and took place at Stamford American International School. By working collaboratively, our students learned to leverage the strengths of their peers, exchange ideas, and collectively tackle mathematical challenges while fostering FIS spirit. This was especially evident during the Inspiration round, where our students not only spoke about the contributions of a Mathematician in the 17th and 18th century, they had also made a theatrical performance of this and related it to the UN sustainable development goals.

Overall, the Junior Mathematics Competition provided a platform for young mathematicians to push their boundaries, expand their knowledge, and develop a well-rounded mathematical toolkit. Below is a summary of all their achievements in each category:
