Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival 2024

Issue 61: 26/4/2024 Blue Pool Road News (Reflections and Achievements)

On March 9th & 10th, 17 students from FIS took part in the Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival 2024 held at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club at Middle Island. Sailors aged from 8 to 18 years from the French, Bilingual and International streams joined the event.

Overall 22 teams signed up for this event including German Swiss International School, South Island School, Hong Kong Sea School and ISF. The competition was very tight, especially during the final races. This gave us the opportunity for great action on the water with our sailors pushing and fighting to get results. The weather was very tricky with heavy winds, rain and cold weather.

We finished with our Pico getting 6th place and our RS Feva getting 2nd, with a very tight finish to the 1st boat.

Earlier this year in late September, 28 sailors took part in the 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race 2023 at the Hebe Haven Yacht Club in Sai Kung. This event is a charity event with 100% of all payments being donated to charities all over Hong Kong. The French International School in total managed to raise HK$16,000.

This event is a non-stop 24 hour race starting at noon on Saturday and finishing at noon on Sunday. Sailors rotate in usually 2 hour shifts throughout the whole day and night. This gives some sailors the opportunity to experience night sailing and shift sailing. We had two boats (RS Feva & Laser Pico) who were sailing for 24 hours. In the end, we managed to finish this unique event with three prizes: 1st in the Pico division, 3rd in Feva and top school, which we have won for the past four years . This event is the longest running 24hr endurance aquathon in Asia and it usually has up to 35 teams including schools such as Hong Kong Academy, Harrow International School and KGV.

The 24 Hour Race is a Fleet Racing event (each boat competes against each other) and the inter school regatta is a Team Racing event (matches, 3 boats against 3 boats). This is a great learning experience for our sailors so they can see how different races run, especially for the young sailors who are looking to take part in international events such as the IODA World Championship.

Lastly, I would like to say a big thank you and congratulations to all our FIS Sailors for taking part in all the events and representing our school, and to all the parents that donated and gave up their time to help.
