COLOUR OF CHINA: FIS supports girls’ education in China

Issue 49: 12/1/2024 From the Principal

Every year, a group of volunteer high school students from FIS organise a rose sale in aid of the Couleurs de Chine charity. The aim of this initiative, which involves selling flowers with symbolic meaning, is to support the education of girls from the Great Miao Mountains, a region affected by inequality and sexism.

In China, sexism persists in certain regions, preventing many girls from gaining access to education. Poverty is also present in these same regions, making access to school even more difficult. It is against this backdrop that the sale of roses is of vital importance.

The aim is to raise funds to help the Couleurs de Chine association. Last year’s sale raised more than HKD 10,000, which will be used to fund the education of a secondary school pupil for 3 years.

For the 2024 Rose Sale, it has been decided to innovate by incorporating Chinese elements into the event. Students will be encouraged to wear traditional Chinese costumes during the sale, and stalls selling Chinese cakes and souvenirs will also be set up. The aim of this initiative is to encourage a meeting between Western culture and the culture of the host country, in this case China.

By committing to important causes and carrying out charitable actions, the participants show their willingness to do their best to contribute to a better world. The schooling of many other girls is still under threat. That’s why we need to continue organising these rose-selling events every year.

You’ll be informed of the date and details of this fundraising event in a future newsletter!

To be continued….
