The 24 Hour Race

Issue 46: 01/12/2023 , Blue Pool Road News (Reflections and Achievements) Y12

Congratulations to our FIS team who raised a huge amount of money and awareness for this charity. The team have written the article below:

The 24 Hour Race is an annual event held at the Peak where thousands of high school and university students gather for 24 hours in a global fight against slavery. The 24 Hour Race additionally, is the largest student-run global movement that brings change to hundreds of people around the world while platforming the upcoming generation to become change makers.

Over the past 2 months, we have used many methods to raise a total of $41,640HKD. With the help of our families, FIS community and friends, we were able to win the trophy of the most fundraised team out of 25+ others throughout Hong Kong. We raised over $16,000 HKD offline, through the use of bake sales at school, selling customised hats and t-shirts and organising breakfasts within our compounds. Overall, we found that raising money offline was quite effective as we received a lot of support from the school and the staff. Online, we were able to raise $25,466 HKD through donations primarily from our families and friends.

The 24 hour race was held at The Peak, with one lap averaging around 3.4km. Throughout the 24 hours, our team completed 240km which was a total of 69 laps. We held an average of a 6 min pace throughout the race. We first arrived at 8am and started to set up our base camp. It was a very exciting atmosphere with everyone eager to run, our ‘fridge’ was consistently stocking up with snacks and refreshments from the support of the teachers and parents. Time went by rapidly from all the different activities we were able to do: boxing each other in the body shield, constantly reinflating the blow up sofas, walking to the bathrooms which were a 15 min walk away, watching motivational videos at 4 am and participating in the 24 hour race activities. At 6 pm we were placed 5th, despite the stark temperature drop at night, we persisted and kept running. This allowed us to climb a few places, finally securing a 2nd place award.

We would not be able to complete this race without the support of all the teachers and parents. A huge thank you to all of them as they kept us energised, fuelled and entertained throughout the 24 hours.
