The best time of the year in Hong Kong

Issue 45: 24/11/2023 From the Principal

Many say that this is the best time of the year to be in Hong Kong as temperatures drop to reasonable levels and the tumble in humidity. Certainly, this improved weather means that we can all get out into the open air more.  I would encourage you to do so this weekend, and perhaps you could go to the Peak where a team of our year 12 students will be competing in the annual 24-hour race against Human Trafficking which sees teams from all schools raising awareness and monies for a great cause.  Best luck to the team, and a big thank you to the teachers who have volunteered to chaperone them through the 24 hours.

Last weekend saw two major events that showed the confident and spirited way in which our students take advantage of some great learning opportunities in Hong Kong.  First of all a team of students from years 9, 10 & 11 competed at the  Junior World Maths Competition. Students were awarded medals based on 5 skills: collaboration, challenge, knowledge, strategy, and creativity. In summary:  They were very successful as you can see from the following:

The next stage for these students is the opportunity to compete on a world stage at Melbourne University in December 2023.

At the same time, the second FIS MUN took place at the TKO campus.  This is an event for students interested in politics and debating to represent a country in a range of committees at a mock-up of the real United Nations Organisation.  Olwen Brown and Juliette Deiss were part of the small 3-man organisation committee that ran the event for 140+ delegates from a range of other International Schools and our own.  What a great job!

There have been a number of other events taking place for students to get opportunities to further themselves outside the classroom.  Mrs Relan and her team of Science teachers ran a very successful Science Week from 13 – 17 November: Mr Day has been coaching various football teams, and the girls’ side will be going to Singapore for a tournament in December: Curtis, Teagan (yr 13) and Gwyneth (yr 11) will be having their designs shown at the 60th Gala on Saturday evening.  So all in all a very busy few weeks!
