A call to all students with sailing experience

Issue 37: 22/9/2023 Blue Pool Road Notices (Upcoming Events) Y7, Y8, Y9, Y10, Y11, Y12, Y13

Every year, the FIS Sailing Team, composed of students who have some (or more) sailing experience comes together to participate in the Hebe Haven 24 Hour race, which is the most important charity dinghy race in Hong Kong.

https://www.hebehaven24hour.com/.

As the name suggests, it is a team race which lasts 24 hours, with team boats crewed by one or two sailors typically performing two hour shifts, from noon to noon the next day, day and night, which gives the sailors the chance to experience night sailing. The team performing the most laps in each boat type wins.

The French School team will have 2 boats this year, like the previous years: a RS Feva and a Laser Pico.  There will be several other school teams: KGV, HKIS, Kellett and Hong Kong Academy in the same type of boats as FIS. There will also be other club or privately organised teams (FIS parents and alumni are looking at entering a team).

The 24 hour race has run since 2002, and has helped raise over 12 million Hong Kong dollars for local charities such as Sailability, SPCA, Children Cancer Foundation, Treats, Ideal and Sai Kung District Community Centre.  This race is the most important event of the year for the FIS Sailing Team as it is one of the few times where both streams and all campuses are able to team up against other local schools. It is also a regatta where we have had very good results in the past years.

We are looking for students who have sailing experience to come forward and contact fissailing@gmail.com. We usually pair up the less experienced sailors with the older ones so that they feel comfortable on the boat. The deadline for signing up is the 30th September and we are always open to having more sailors in the FIS community.

If you are unable to sail, you can still help us by donating money to https://donate.hebehaven24hour.com/team?French_International_School2023

It will be linked to the team and go directly to the local charities that the event sponsors.
