The FISCA Chronicles: How I Spent My Holidays!
For many families, the end of year school break is a time to celebrate, but there are so many different ways to celebrate!
Our family celebrated by using the two week holiday to explore part of Asia we hadn’t been to before. We spent our Christmas Day in Laos and our New Year’s Eve in Northern Thailand. After three years spent in Hong Kong, it was a breath of fresh air to be able to roam the countryside in Laos and Thailand, un-masked, and discover these wonderfully rich cultures.
There was so much to discover along the Mekong riverside: from the breathtaking Kwang-Si waterfalls to the infamous Golden Triangle jungle. While cruising the Mekong on a slow boat, we were initiated into the Laotian culture of bamboo weaving and cooking, visited remote hill tribe villages, and participated in a blessing ceremony with the elders. We also had the chance to learn about elephants, walk among them, watch them bathe, and understand how the elephant tourism industry transformed as a result of Covid into a better, more ethical experience. On the night of Christmas, Santa managed to make a small detour to bring one small gift to each!
The kids loved all of it: the cruise, the temples, the cooking class and of course the elephants!!
