French International School appoints Paul Y as the main contractor for their new TKO campus

[Hong Kong – 10 February 2017]

On Thursday 9 February 2017, a traditional Bai San Ceremony was held in the Tseung Kwan O new campus site of the French International School (FIS) to mark the commencement of superstructure works. The new campus is due to open in September 2018. In Hong Kong, Bai San ceremonies are traditionally held at the start of construction projects to bring good luck and fortune.

The tower crane has been erected and we are right on schedule for opening our innovative eco-school for staff, students and the community to enjoy,” said Arnaud de Surville, President of the Board of the French International School.

Paul Y Engineering was appointed as the main contractor for the new campus in December 2016. FIS is delighted to be in partnership with this experienced and respected Hong Kong company which first accessed the site in January 2017 following completion of the foundation laying.

We are excited to enter into the next phase of development for this fantastic new campus – I wish all the teams on site the best. This ceremony marks the beginning of construction above ground and this dream school will soon be a reality, visible to all!” said Mr Eric Berti, Consul General of France for Hong Kong and Macau.

The new campus will open its doors in September 2018 creating 950 primary and junior secondary school places to better serve both French and International students in Hong Kong. With adaptable and flexible layouts and a wealth of differently scaled, multi-purpose spaces inside, students will benefit from a stimulating and innovative learning environment. In addition, the campus will offer state of the art sporting facilities – a large gymnasium, swimming pool and running track – as well as a 300 seat auditorium all of which will benefit the wider public. FIS is committed to establishing strong links within its neighbourhood by developing new initiatives while also providing a hub to showcase French arts and culture in Hong Kong.

The greenfield site was awarded by the Hong Kong Education Bureau (EDB) in 2015.  Following a design competition, FIS announced in November 2015 the appointment of Henning Larsen Architects, the design architects, and AGC Design, the executive architect, for the development of their new eco-friendly, forward-thinking and sustainable campus. Tysan Foundation Limited were chosen after a competitive tender to be the foundation contractor in May 2016. The Quantity Surveyors selected were Rider Levett Bucknall.

About French International School (FIS)

FIS was established in 1963/64 as one of the first international schools in Hong Kong. The school offers two streams: the French and International Streams, preparing students towards certification in the French national examination, the French Baccalaureate or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. In 1988, FIS became the first in Hong Kong to be authorised as an IB World School.

The school will open a new state of the art eco-campus in Tseung Kwan O in September 2018. Currently, the school is one of the largest international through schools in Hong Kong and welcomes over 2,700 students from Reception/Moyenne Section to Year 13/Terminale, representing 40 different nationalities, across four campuses in Happy Valley, Jardine’s Lookout, Chai Wan and Hung Hom.

The school’s mission is to provide, together with families, a nurturing, culturally diverse community that inspires our young people to realize their true potential as confident, independent learners and responsible global citizens with moral values and integrity.
