An educational outing focused on biodiversity, in partnership with WWF and as part of the Hong Kong Inter-School City Nature Challenge, was organised for all 6è students taking the Integrated Science and Technology Education (EIST) class and some CM2 students, these past two weeks on our BPR and TKO campuses.
During these two field trips, the students were given the task to take photos of the biodiversity (plant and animal) in and around each campus using the iNaturalist application. This project is an opportunity for them to participate in a fun inter-school competition, while studying biodiversity, exchanging with researchers, and progressing with their “Building an insect hotel” project.
The outings took place in small groups of students (3 or 4) accompanied by a referent parent. In addition, EIST teachers, educational assistants (AED) and three scientists from the ECF Hong Kong Inter-School City Nature Challenge 2019-2020 Partner School Programme were present to assist the groups, going from one to the other.
This very stimulating programme allowed our students to become aware of how rich their daily environment is in terms of biodiversity, while involving the whole community through the active participation of parents.

This experience was more than important to make us realize how amazing nature was… From elephants to scorpions they are all equally useful to this world. With iNaturalist and it’s helpful information, it did help me to enjoy pointing out and asking myself what species I had come across. And just like that, in an hour I had already learnt loads!

La sortie WWF m’a appris que les êtres vivants n’étaient pas seulement des animaux mais aussi des végétaux. Quand je suis partie pour prendre des photos, je voulais absolument trouver des insectes. Mais , au final, j’ai trouvé plein de végétaux magnifiques et colorés.

La sortie de classe WWF organisée par l’école m’a beaucoup plu et intéressé. En particulier, la sortie m’a permis de mieux connaître et aussi mieux comprendre l’environnement proche de ma nouvelle école à Hong Kong où je réside seulement depuis quelques mois.
Si la ville de Hong Kong est une cité impressionnante avec de grands immeubles et un port immense, c’est aussi un ensemble d’îles et de territoires où la nature est omniprésente et à notre portée presque quotidiennement. C’est un lieu parfait pour observer la nature, les plantes et les insectes et en apprendre plus sur la biodiversité.
J’ai beaucoup apprécié l’utilisation de l’application iNaturalist, la démarche scientifique et les échanges lorsque l’on poste des photographies des choses que l’on a pu observer autour de nous. Un autre point positif est que lorsqu’on poste une photo on peut recevoir un commentaire très rapidement ce qui aide beaucoup pour identifier l’espèce prise en photo et on découvre de nouveaux mots scientifiques !
