A Sustainable Summer
The summer break has finally arrived so let’s make it a sustainable one! Before we all take off, whether you are heading to the beach, the mountains or the city here are seven tips to live more sustainably this summer:
#1 for Beach Goers
When selecting your sunscreen check the ingredients and avoid the “three Os”: oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene. Since the science is inconclusive on whether ‘reef-friendly’ products are actually better for our oceans than conventional ones, practice the first R,, Reduce, while at the beach. Maximize the use of shade and UV-blocking clothing and limit the use of sunscreen to exposed areas.
#2 for Bookworms
Here are three of our favourite titles on sustainable living to cater to different reading preferences:
- Easy read: Four Fish
- Medium read: The Third Plate
- More technical read: Soil
#3 for Chefs and Gourmands
Eat local produce of the region you are visiting and have fun exploring the farmer’s markets. Better yet, be adventurous and try some tasty plant based options – your favourite hot drinks or smoothies with plant-based milk, vegan or vegetarian foods, and alternative meat and fish options. Remember to bring your own shopping bag!
#4 for Social Butterflies
Avoid the use of single use plates and cutlery when you meet up with friends and family for lunch, brunch, afternoon picnics or dinner.
#5 for Sports Enthusiasts
Ride your bicycle! Your body will also thank you for it!
#6 for Thirsty Ones
Bring your reusable water bottle everywhere. It’s hot after all, you need to hydrate!
#7 for Homebodies
When choosing your kitchen, bathroom and home cleaning products look for options with natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils that also have biodegradable or recyclable packaging. Even better if you can find local shops with refill station offerings!
By making small conscious changes we can create a better planet for all of us.
Wishing all FIS families a wonderful, reenergising and green summer!
