Mekong Cup
For this first sportive trip since what seems like an eternity, 12 of our students, boys and girls, from 5ème to 3ème went to Saigon, to compete against other schools from the Asia-Pacific zone (Phnom Penh, Jakarta, Bangkok, Singapore, etc…) in different sports activities.
Despite an unflattering seventh place in badminton for our entry into the competition on Tuesday, 10th January, Flora F., as well as our 5ème students, Josephine L. and Louis L., managed to keep the team afloat thanks to their talent with rackets.
The next part of the programme on Wednesday was the Aquathlon, where the aptly named Maxime C. stepped up to the plate and, after swimming 450m (the maximum distance, in less than 8 minutes), finished his heat in the lead, as did our captain, Tern K., to give Hong Kong a sixth place finish, a hopeful finish for the rest of the events.
Wednesday afternoon and evening were devoted to a visit of the historical center of Ho Chi Minh City, followed by a circus show at the opera house: the A O Show, which were sure to leave no student indifferent.
On Thursday, in climbing, our athletes from Blue Pool and Tseung Kwan O stepped up to the third place of the podium behind the unavoidable Singaporeans, and the Saigon Spidermen, who will undoubtedly be contacted to appear in the next Spiderman movie.
In basketball, the now revered Coach Delettrez, aka “the Professor”, solved the Thai equation in the semi-final, with the great help of the on-fire Tern K. and Mathurin D., our young basketball players qualified for the final against the formidable Cambodians of René Descartes high school.
Thanks to an iron defense, the impregnable fortress of the Phom Penh high school, renamed “the Descartes castle”, finally won at the buzzer on an improbable dunk of a 5ème student.
The programme of the last day, Friday, which offered acrosport and ultimate frisbee, was going to prove decisive for the attribution of the medals.
In frisbee, our budding champions managed to get a semi-final against their counterparts from Phnom Penh, but finally lost to take 4th place, which is more than honourable.
In Acro, behind the untouchables of Ho Chi Minh City, our Hong Kongers, under the leadership of Jeanne K., also finished in 4th place, which also ended up being our overall place, at the foot of the podium, but proud of what they have accomplished.
On Saturday, at the time of the return, luggage filled with memories and some pockets under the eyes, two of our favorite scatterbrains who obviously did not want to return, wanted to prolong the stay by 45 minutes by forgetting their passports on the plane. Everything is finally back in order and our (almost) champions at home.
See you soon for the next Prozap!
