Climate Fresk Ambassadors – Interview

Interview by FIS Sustainability Committee

Have you met Martial Jaume and Anaëlle Barthelon, two members of the FIS teaching staff?

Martial was born in Brittany and holds a Ph.D in immunology. He came to HK in 2004 as a researcher on SARS-CoV and zoonosis. Who better than him could therefore apprehend the connection between animal health and human health, and ultimately understand their relation to the planet’s health? In 2012, he joined FIS as a teacher of SVT (Life and Earth Sciences) and initiated the implementation of E.I.S.T (Integrated Sciences) in 2016. In addition to teaching some science classes at TKO both in French and in English, he is now FIS Sustainability Coordinator, in charge of leading and implementing sustainable projects across the entire school.

Anaëlle comes from Grenoble and was raised in the countryside. As a little girl, she spent her time outdoors and she has always felt strongly connected to the earth. After her PhD in ‘green’ chemistry in Paris, she spent some time in research and higher education, she returned to her first passion: Sciences and secondary education. She arrived in HK in 2015 working for the FIS as Deputy Principal of the French Secondary Stream.

With their common scientific backgrounds and strong commitment to sustainability, they decide to import the Climate Fresk to HK in 2020, for which they are now the representative ambassadors.

What is the Climate Fresk?

It is a collaborative team game designed to raise awareness about climate change and explain the relationship between human activity and environmental impact. Founded in 2018, The Climate Fresk is now an important reference tool allowing individuals and organisations to fully grasp the challenges of climate change.

Thanks to Martial and Anaëlle, approximately 200 students have played the game, triggering among some students a real commitment to become in turn Climate Fresk facilitators and to conduct the game within exterior organisations, a fine indicator of success.

What is the key benefit of the Climate Fresk?

The main aim of the game is to raise awareness around the fact that all sectors of activity are interconnected and have an environmental impact. By acquiring a global view, players are encouraged to change their way of thinking. The game also calls upon collective intelligence to find solutions and hopefully rethink and transform our social models.

Interested in trying it? Everyone can play, children and adults alike.
