FIS “UNESCO Club” Project

Victoria, a student in 1ES1, has decided to create a version of a UNESCO club at FIS with some assistance from her form tutor, Mr Drémeaux. She has recruited 30 other very motivated students and has divided the Club into several groups, each with a different aim: Education, Communication and Information, Heritage, Environment and Human Rights. The Club is headed by a President (Victoria), a Treasurer (Tara) and a leader in each of the groups. Every week, there is a meeting for each group and a General Assembly is organised every month so that all club members can get together, see what progress has been made and team build.

Some small projects have already been put into effect and have had very good feedback:

  • the Education Committee published videos explaining about each stream to assist with guidance for students in seconde;
  • the Communications and Information Committee sold badges at the “Broken Wings” Charity Gala to raise funds for charity and used the screens in school to explain the Dragon Boat Festival.
  • In addition, the Human Rights Committee has established a week advocating Male / Female equality to raise awareness among students.
  • The Heritage Committee has also done some work with students in 5eme about the history of Hong Kong in order to convey the importance of cultural heritage.

The objective is to motivate students so that the club is running as soon as possible from September next year and can then be officially affiliated by UNESCO and put bigger projects into effect, along with charities. The club will also be bigger: students from the International Stream, Lycée and 3eme will be invited to join. The 2017-2018 leadership team has been elected with the president and treasurer remaining, and a general secretary (Thomas) added.
