At FIS, we believe that sustainable development relies on a fundamental balance between preserving our planet and ensuring the fulfillment of those who inhabit it. Our commitment goes beyond simple ecological management; it is built around three pillars: the environment, citizenship, as well as health and well-being.

From the transformation of our facilities to the evolution of our pedagogy, we place these three pillars at the very heart of our identity. Through concrete actions and committed leadership, we ensure that reducing our footprint, practicing responsible citizenship, and prioritizing everyone’s health become daily reflexes for every member of our community.

From audit to classroom

During the 2024–2025 school year, we conducted a whole-school sustainability audit in partnership with Metanoia.

The findings not only guided tangible improvements to our campus and operations — but also transformed how we teach. Across both Primary and Secondary, and in subjects as diverse as Art and Mathematics, we intentionally integrate audit insights into our curriculum. This enables real-world, case-based learning — helping students naturally develop awareness, critical thinking, and responsibility toward environmental sustainability.

Holistic Garden

By actively engaging with our campus gardens, students gain hands-on experience in sustainable practices — from managing organic waste and mastering composting techniques, to creatively reusing natural materials and cultivating a diverse range of plants. They grow not only fruits, vegetables, and aromatic herbs, but also curiosity, responsibility, and a deeper connection to the natural world.

Beyond the classroom, this living laboratory nurtures campus biodiversity: pollinator-friendly flowers attract bees and butterflies, native plants support local ecosystems, and healthy soil teems with microbial life. In tending the earth, students learn that sustainability is not abstract — it’s rooted in daily choices, collective care, and the quiet magic of growth.

A gardening club called the Green Club was also created to enable primary and secondary students to maintain the school’s green spaces in a more independent way. This is in addition to teacher-led gardening projects.

Green Week

During Green Week, students immerse themselves in a variety of eco-friendly initiatives: they tackle eco-challenges, craft art from recycled materials, plant trees or organize sustainability fairs. The week is packed with meaningful experiences, from lively classroom debates on climate action to campus clean-ups and green innovation contests.

Every activity is thoughtfully designed to spark curiosity, nurture a sense of responsibility, and empower students to become the changemakers of tomorrow—all while building a stronger, greener community together.

Climate Fresk

At our school, we make learning about climate change engaging and empowering with the Climate Fresk tool! Our secondary students dive into playful, eye-opening workshops that break down the science and solutions behind climate change.

But the learning doesn’t stop there—these students then become teachers themselves, sharing their newfound knowledge with primary students. We believe in the power of peer-to-peer exchange to inspire curiosity, deepen understanding, and spark action at every age. Together, we’re building a community of informed, passionate changemakers!

Student Council

Every year, primary and secondary students on each campus elect student representatives. This process teaches them to exercise their rights and duties as citizens.

Student representatives have the opportunity to participate in school projects, to talk with senior staff and to make decisions as part of its governing bodies (lower secondary school council, upper secondary school council, student voice council, campus council and school council).

CAS Week

Though CAS ( Creativity, Activity, Service) is an IB Diploma core, we’ve expanded it to all secondary students to foster its values. Students explore global issues—poverty, education gaps, food/water scarcity—and take action through volunteering: tutoring peers, serving locally (e.g., food distribution, hospital work), or even building schools abroad.

They also raise funds for causes like the FIS Swimathon and ImpactHK, and deepen cultural understanding through Hong Kong traditions like dragon dancing and martial arts.

Peer Mediation Training

During this dynamic, interactive training session aiming to resolve minor conflicts, students work on the psychosocial skills of empathy, kindness and neutrality. They learn the mediation process, which includes organising meetings with students to resolve conflict.

Though the aim is to give students autonomy in this process, there is always a debrief with an adult to assess the mediation and check the solutions suggested.

Anti-Bullying

Our priority is the physical and mental well-being of our students. To achieve this, we are committed to an ongoing process of training and ensuring all our colleagues are up-to-date.

On the National Day Against Bullying, we worked on the procedures to address bullying and harassment situations. Together, we share the same concerns: the well-being and success of our students.
