Outing to T-Park – FIS 5è students

For the second year in a row, all the 5è students visited T-Park with their Science and Technology teachers. A public facility, T-Park is nonetheless operated by the French company Veolia, selected by Hong Kong for its great expertise. T stands for ‘Transformation’ – turning rubbish into energy. The plant turns wastewater treatment-generated sludge into electricity: 1,200 tons of sludge is incinerated daily, generating enough electricity for the plant to operate self-sufficiently, as well as to provide energy for around 4,000 homes!

But this one-of-a-kind facility in Hong Kong also stands out in its environmentally-responsible approach. The plant itself was built out of materials developed through sustainable production chains and its various components were pre-assembled elsewhere to limit the on-site pollution. Additionally, the industrial fumes generated by the T-Park activity are treated before they are let out, the trucks transporting sludge are thoroughly washed before they exit the plant and all combustion residues are reduced to inert ashes (10% of the initial sludge volume) before going to landfill.

The plant is well equipped to welcome school visits and holds a dedicated centre explaining the various operations for waste management and its transformation into energy. The students were also able to take part in a set of hands-on activities focused around water, in line with the different themes linked to ecology and sustainable development they have studied this year.

What a rich day, full of enlightening insights on sustainable development. Many thanks to our partner Veolia!
