Botticelli to Van Gogh: masterpieces of the National Gallery, London

Issue 55: 1/3/2024 , Blue Pool Road News (Reflections and Achievements) Y12, Y13, 1ère, Terminale

On February 22nd, as part of the arts and IB Visual Arts specialty, a visit was organised to the Palace Museum Hong Kong to discover the special exhibition «Botticelli à Van Gogh: masterpieces of the National Gallery, London».

This is a major and must-see exhibition in Hong Kong, to see absolutely, until April 11! This carefully curated collection showcases the works of some of the most renowned artists in history, spanning 400 years of Western art history and artistic movements. Our students had the unique opportunity to witness the evolution of art and its different styles, immersing themselves in the 52 masterpieces of artists such as Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Goya, Turner, Constable, Monet, Van Gogh and many others.

The students of terminal and Y13 had prepared upstream the analysis of a selected work. And it was a real pleasure for the whole group to listen to them during their presentation, sometimes on Renaissance paintings with religious themes, sometimes on portraits of the Baroque period, or the Spanish golden age. Some preferred to analyze landscapes, Romantic or Venetian, of the XVII or XVIII century. Others have analysed impressionist and post-impressionist paintings featuring artists such as Monet or Van Gogh and the modernity of this period.

Everyone enjoyed the direct interaction with these masterpieces and realised that nothing replaces face-to-face with art!
