English Language Support Session

Issue 38: 29/9/2023 From the Principal

This week, our English department heads, Shumaira Join (Jardine’s and Chai Wan) and Ashley Hamilton (TKO), introduce you to the ELS scheme, which has been set up from GS to CM2 for pupils who need a helping hand in English and our beginners in English.

ELS: It is an English Language Support Session

It is aimed at providing extra individualised support for English language learning. By tailoring support to individual students’ needs, we can ensure that students have the opportunity to succeed in learning English. This might involve small group instruction or one-on-one sessions.

At the beginning of the year, students go through a diagnostic evaluation in class. Based on their performance on these positioning tests, the English teacher identifies the areas where a student may require extra support. The teacher then discusses the need for ELS for a certain group of students with the team and puts forth a working plan for the current period. As the child works through the proposed programme, we will assess their progress and make adjustments where necessary. This may include evolving the plan or removing the support entirely.

Students who require extra support will be pulled out during their English lesson in small groups or so and will work with another English teacher. The teacher will then further identify the strengths and weaknesses of the group. The work done during this small group is individually catered to the student’s ability. Teaching is done through visual aids, worksheets, interactive games, oral language and hands-on activities.
