The French International School of Hong Kong Celebrates its 60th Anniversary!

Issue 16: 20/1/2023

Dear FIS Community,

By now, you might have seen on or off-line our new FIS 60th logo (1963-2023) celebrating 6 decades of excellence in Hong Kong.  You might have seen or heard, maybe even participated in the inauguration of the new library at Jardine’s campus that kicked-off a year of celebration… Or maybe saw the exhibition on the construction of Europe (60 years since the Treaty of Elysée) that is gracing our Blue Pool Road 5th floor, courtesy of the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong.

1963… A School Year

“The Cold War entered a period of appeasement with the installation of a hotline between Moscow and Washington… Far from such worries, Mary Poppins led two children from the city of London to a world of fantasy and poetry… In the bookshops, children requested the latest “Club des Cinq” book and in the playgrounds, boys played Asterix Gladiateur. The older lycée students hummed a “Hard day’s night” by four young lads from Liverpool.

And in Hong Kong, a school was born. A French School. Nothing grand, just the beginnings of a school.” […]*

From its beginnings sheltered in the Bethany compound (still vibrant under the management of the HK Academy for Performing Arts) in Pokfulam, to today’s top-flight, dual French and International streams housed in 4 campuses, the French International School has maintained its students as its center pillar.  Today, supported by a diverse and engaged community, our 2,500-plus students look to the future with renewed confidence.

On the occasion of its 60th Anniversary, FIS will continue to celebrate its presence in Hong Kong through a variety of student-led and community events, revolving around the arts, culture, entertainment and sustainable development, continuing with the first edition of a FIS Alumni Trophy honouring our past students and their formidable actions as entrepreneurs in Hong Kong and culminating with the return of a Fundraising Gala night in November 2023.  Watch this space for more details!
