Library - Secondary - Battle of the Books

It is hard to believe how the BOB programme has grown since I introduced it to Hong Kong back in 2001 to two schools. Now there are over 20 international schools and a modified local school branch just about as big under the jurisdiction of the same committee. The BOB model is based on the original concept used for a radio show competition in Chicago, USA about 50 years ago. It is essentially a friendly competition centred on literature with a set number of book titles released each year for students to enjoy.

There are two categories of the reading programme: Primary School, which involves years 5 & 6; and Middle school, which involves years 7, 8, and 9. The latter equates to our F1 to F3s. In each category the students choose to read from a list of 20 books.
In May, schools in HK battle it out according to regions with rounds held on two different days which form the semi-finals. The winners of the semis move into the BOB championship where two schools in each category battle it out.

Last year our school tied for first at the championship and lost in a tie-breaker round by one point! This year FIS has over a dozen participants as the MS level with all students from our championship team returning. The 2012-2013 season looks very bright indeed.
